What started as the brainchild of an Indianapolis Colts executive will come full circle nine years later.
Back in 2007, Tom Zupancic, senior vice president of the Colts at the time, wanted to find a way to bring the Super Bowl trophy to Hendricks County, and the United Way's Breakfast of Champions was born. But this event has morphed well beyond recognizing a Super Bowl title turning into an annual way to recognize unsung heroes within the community.
I've been fortunate enough to attend a few of these gatherings, and there is no shortage of inspiration, satisfaction and fulfillment in recognizing individuals and organizations and the good work they have done to benefit the entire community. The guest speakers haven't been bad either including Mitch Daniels, Brad Stevens and R. Martin Umbarger.
But this year has a special twist in that for only the second time ever it will be held just outside of Hendricks County inside the Indianapolis Colts Complex known as The Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center, and Colts punter Pat McAfee will be the guest speaker. Anyone who knows McAfee knows that alone will be worth the price of admission.
The question-and-answer style session with McAfee will be mediated by current Hendricks County Commissioner Matt Whetstone. I'm told it will be quite candid, but will also focus on McAfee's community involvement.
Tickets still remain for the Breakfast of Champions, and it is open to the public. You don't have to be a United Way contributor or resident of Hendricks County to attend.
Come out and join me for a morning full of good food, good times and to honor some truly good people in a championship setting! Here are the details:

- Cost: Tickets are $30 a person or $500 for a table of eight and proceeds benefit the United Way

Of course. And delicious roast lamb or grilled trout for dinner, too. As you'd expect, most meals are based on fresh, local produce and include homemade breads, cakes, soups and preserves, as well as homegrown fruit and veg.
