Molly Ringwald Covers 'Breakfast Club' Theme, Simple Minds' 'Don't You (Forget About Me)'

One of the most indelible moments from John Hughes's high school classic "The Breakfast Club" was when the various teenage weirdos were walking away from their unforgettable day in detention, with their voiceover reminding us of what a profound experience they had all gone through. The song that played over this moment was Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me), " which besides being incredibly on-the-nose, totally worked. Now one of the stars of "The Breakfast Club, " Molly Ringwald, has produced a jazz cover of the song for her new album, "Except Sometimes."

Ringwald told a Huffington Post blogger that: "I really think the reason why we did it was because when we recorded the album, it really wasn't that long after John Hughes had passed away and he was on my mind a lot, " she said. (For those playing at home, Hughes also directed Ringwald in "Sixteen Candles" and Ringwald starred in "Pretty in Pink, " which Hughes wrote and produced.) "I thought it would be interesting to just hear that song in such a different way really exciting. So that's pretty much why I did that. It was the only song on the album really that's modern at all."

Ringwald has been performing in various jazz outfits (including her pianist father's) since she was a little kid, and her take on the material is certainly jazzy. If we were walking away from a day in detention, we'd be happy to have Ringwald's version accompany us.
