Coffee Breakfast

Much like the UK, American families will have toast and cereal during the week, with toasted bagels in places like New York. For more special occasions and on weekends, there is a lot to choose from. Pancakes are really popular in America and are served with maple syrup, and maybe bacon or sausages on the side.

Orange juice is the most popular drink to have at breakfast time. People also find it hard to start the day without a cup of coffee!

In the southern US, grits are a popular daily breakfast. It is ground corn, similar to oatmeal or polenta.

Traditional breakfast foods in Canada are cooked eggs, fried pork sausages or bacon, fried or deep-fried potatoes, toasted bread, pancakes (or egg-battered French Toast) and syrup, cereals, or hot oatmeal. They are very similar to breakfasts in the USA. Maple syrup is popular in Canada, so you will probably have the option with your breakfast.

In Australia, they also have cereal, oatmeal (also called porridge) and toast during the week. Vegemite is a spread made up of vegetable extracts, and it is a favourite in Australia and you usually have it for breakfast on your toast. However, some people find it quite strong. If you’re not sure, try a little bit first before digging in!

Smoothies and orange juice are quite common to have with your breakfast as fruit and vegetables are usually included in every Australian meal.

Banana bread is also really popular in Sydney.

Breakfast in New Zealand is very similar to Australian breakfast. On the weekends or at a restaurant, you may find other meals like eggs Benedict, which poached eggs and hollandaise sauce on toast, sometimes with bacon, salmon or spinach. You might also find beans on toast, pancakes, yogurt, and smoothies. Breakfast nearly always includes coffee, tea or both.
