Greenwich, Connecticut is not just home to many beautiful parks in Greenwich, museums and other natural and cultural Greenwich attractions. It is also home to many alluring and elegant French restaurants where romance and love are teeming. The former home of the famous restaurant Jean-Louis–which closed when the owner and his wife retired to head a culinary school in Vermont–still has more than its fair share of fine French cuisine. Here’s an abridged list of our favorite French restaurants in Greenwich CT.
Bistro Versailles
One of the most popular French restaurants in Greenwich CT is the Bistro Versailles. Versailles is known for its casual dining for breakfast and lunch, with very romantic bistro fare for dinner. Their Sunday brunch menu is nothing to laugh at, either. This restaurant recently closed for an extended period of time, though it re-opened under the management of the owner of Meli-Melo, a more casual French establishment located further down Greenwich Avenue. Nestled among some of the best shopping in Greenwich, Versailles specializes in regional French dishes and offers some of the best pastries in Fairfield County.
La Bretagne
While its location just over the border precludes it from being one of the official French restaurants in Greenwich CT, La Bretagne is well-established and very famous. More than a few local French classes have been brought here to experience true French cuisine. The restaurant is known to serve delicious and traditional cuisine from seafood to more exotic dishes–for American tastes, at least. There is no question that this small, but well-established restaurant can serve both the casual diner and the gourmets of the area. Food at La Bretagne is not the only thing on offer. They also have an extensive wine list which features the best wine labels from around the world.
L’Escale
Elegant, stylish and sophisticated is how visitors would describe L’escale. This restaurant features an extensive outdoor seating area right on Greenwich harbor, as well as a gorgeous indoor dining room. The floors of this restaurant are adorned with 200-year old stone terra cotta tiles and the walls are decorated with other imported items from France. The main focal point of the dining room, however, is the fireplace, which crackles warmly in chillier weather. Besides the beauty of the restaurant, the food draws quite a following. Unlike La Bretagne or La Cremaillere, this cuisine could be described as more updated, rather than the more typical dishes one would expect in a more established French restaurant. Either way, it’s one of the few opportunities in town as far as waterfront restaurants in Greenwich CT.
La Cremaillere
La Cremaillere restaurant is a very attractive Country French-style restaurant just over the border from Greenwich in Westchester County. This is a beautiful establishment situated in a 1750 farmhouse, commonly known as the “Widow Brush House”. The restaurant is popular for its fine cuisine and its award-winning wine cellar. For five decades, La Cremaillere has been delighting the local clientele, most of whom are quite cosmopolitan.
